The media play an increasingly important role in democratic societies in the Americas, yet the ownership of media outlets is often little known. FOCAL's Mapping the Media in the Americas project provided interactive, online maps of media ownership in 12 countries in the Americas alongside data on election results, political finance and demographics. Maps of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay were created. The Mapping the Media in the Americas project was launched in 2004 to foster transparency around the role and connection of media and democracy and provide information that would facilitate further research and investigation. It concluded in 2007, with institutions in Canada and Latin America adopting the maps to ensure they are updated and remain useful tools for analysts and policy-makers. FOCAL worked with the Latin American Research Centre of the University of Calgary and the Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) on this project.
