2. Interns: Health and Education of Marginalized Populations
Irina Ortiz holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Economics with an emphasis in development from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Shortly after her graduate work, she was an intern under the Aga Khan Foundation Canada's Fellowship in International Microfinance and Microenterprise. She worked for a year in Kyrgyzstan with the University of Central Asia as a local economic development assistant and later as an intern at the First Microcredit Company part of Aga Khan Development Network. Currently, in addition to her duties at FOCAL, she is involved in research projects on microcredit for the International Centre for Eradication of Poverty based in Canada.
María Trimble holds an Honours BA in International Development with an emphasis on Historical Perspectives in Development from the University of Guelph. While completing her BA, Maria studied for a semester with FLACSO Cuba at the Universidad de La Habana in Havana, Cuba. She recently returned from a six month CIDA internship with the Coady International Institute in Huancayo, Peru, where she was responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of an at-home infant stimulation pilot program in rural villages. She will spend the next four months doing research for the Health and Education project, specifically focusing on healthcare in Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. In September 2009, Maria will begin an MA in Latin American Studies at New York University’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies in New York City, United States.
