FOCAL Internship Program
FOCAL offers part-time, voluntary internships during the summer, fall and winter terms. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with project managers and the Executive Director in the implementation of FOCAL’s research and work programs that span the following policy areas:
- Poverty and Inequality
- Labour Mobility and Development
- Health and Education
- Inter-American Affairs
- Governance and Democracy
- Research Forum on Cuba
What is available now?
The Internship Program provides an opportunity for university students and/or recent graduates to gain practical work experience in these areas, in preparation for careers in international relations, international development, diplomacy, public administration and policy analysis. While most internships are unpaid, the highly motivated FOCAL intern can anticipate the following enhancement of his/her professional development portfolio (this list is not exhaustive):
- Focus and develop research, writing and project management skills in a specific geo-strategic area.
- Develop expertise in issue-based Canadian foreign policy.
- Develop opportunities to network and liaison with top experts and to development a greater understanding of actors and emerging issues in Canadian foreign and development policy towards Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Participate in the orientation, evaluation and graduation program with intern supervising team to help the intern sets goals and ensure that FOCAL supports accomplishments over the course of the internship.
Recruitment
The next recruitment period is for the September to December 2009 Fall-Winter session.
In general, FOCAL expects from 7.5 to 15 hours per week from its interns, depending on the project.
Preference will be given to applicants with a degree(s) and/or substantial coursework in International Development, International Relations, Politics, Economics, Law, Public Policy and Public Health. Candidates must have demonstrated interest in Latin America through their course selection or travel. Fluency in Spanish is an asset.
