FOCALPoint: Spotlight on the Americas

Guidelines for submissions

Thank you for your interest in FOCAL POINT. To submit articles for publication, please follow the guidelines below for style and format.  Please feel free to contact the editorial team with additional questions.

Materials

We publish articles (analytical pieces) and Op-Eds (opinion pieces). FOCAL does not assume the responsibility of the opinion expressed in them, as expressed in a disclaimer on the last page of FP. Descriptive articles are not accepted.

Length: 700 to 1,000 words. Submissions may be edited for length and clarity. When time permits, final edited drafts of your article will be sent for your approval before printing.

Please include a one-sentence byline at the end of your article. You may includre your e-mail address, professional affiliation, and any upcoming publications.

Submission of Articles and Editorial Procedures

1. FOCALPoint is published 10 times a year and is released on the first Monday of every month, except July and January. The editions of FOCALPoint are in English, but some articles are also printed in Spanish or French when space permits.

2. You may submit unsolicited articles for publication, preferably two weeks before release. The editorial team will assess the inclusion of the materials in each issue according to the quality of the article, the number of articles already received and how time-sensitive the articles are. Please do let us know ahead of time which language the article will be written in so we can make the necessary arrangements for translation.

3. Agreements and submissions should be done by email with copy to the entire editorial team.

References

We do not publish bibliographies at the end of articles or footnotes. If you want to make direct quotes or note the source of the information included in your text, please follow the following method:

Books and documents:

  • According to a United Nations publication from 2000, The World's Women 2000: Trends and Statistics, Caribbean women enjoy higher economic participation rates than do women in Central and South America.

Newspapers and magazines:

  • On August 12, El Tiempo reported that…

These references should be reduced to the minimum for space reasons.

We thank you again for your interest.
