The Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL) and the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales (COMEXI) Launch the Mexico-Canada Initiative

  • The Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales and the Canadian Foundation for the Americas are combining forces to create an independent working group that will bring forward ideas to add dynamism, deepen and broaden the relationship between Mexico and Canada.
  • The Mexico-Canada Initiative were delivered to and received by the President of Mexico and the Prime Minister of Canada in advance of their participation in the North American Leaders Summit held in Guadalajara the 9th and 10th of August.

The Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL) and the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales (COMEXI) are launching a project to deepen and broaden the Mexico-Canada relationship by convening the private sector and leading think tanks in each country to generate new ideas and initiatives.

The bilateral relationship is of critical importance to both countries, to their relations with the United States and at the hemispheric and global level.

The Working Group is co-chaired by the Hon. William Graham, former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense and by H.E. Ambassador Rosario Green, President of External Relations Commission of Mexico's Senate and former Secretary of External Relations for Mexico.

The members of the Working Group include the Canada West Foundation, the Alberta Institute of American Studies at the University of Alberta, the Conference Board of Canada, le Centre d'etudes interamericaines de l'Universite Laval, the Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economicas, and the Centro de Investigaciones sobre America del Norte de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

Taking into account that the relationship between Mexico and Canada is much more than trade or administrative matters, this Group will bring practical, innovative proposals for action to decision-makers in both countries that will contribute to advancing their bilateral relationship.
