Welcome to the FOCAL archive

The Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL) is no longer in operation. This website documents FOCAL's activities and accomplishments throughout its existence. Thank you for your interest in the work of FOCAL.

Private Sector

FOCAL provided insight and policy options for private sector contributions toward development in the Americas. Although the private sector is an oft-overlooked development actor, it plays an important role in the Americas. Notably, it attracts foreign investment, creates jobs, builds infrastructure and provides social services.

By focusing attention on the private sector, FOCAL sought to provide analysis and policy options on: economic integration; corporate social responsibility; Indigenous Peoples and resource development; the development roles of diasporas and remittances; Chinese investment in Latin America; and trade and development.

Diasporas & Remittances

migration_diaspora_event_editedFOCAL provided analysis and policy options on how diasporas and remittances play a critical development role in the Americas. Diasporas are key development actors in the Americas, whose support of their country of origin provides not only direct foreign investment, but in some cases sizable portions of its Gross Domestic Product, outstripping official international donor assistance. FOCAL’s work in this area included convening donor roundtables to discuss this phenomenon, as well as identifying research and best practices, researching the link between diasporas and private sector development, and liaising with Latin American and Caribbean diaspora organizations in Canada.

With the abandonment of the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) vision, economic integration and trade continues on a regional as well as bilateral basis. FOCAL’s work in economic integration identified policy openings and alternatives for Canadian policy-makers by providing evaluations of current trends in sub-regional and hemispheric economic co-operation.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Indigenous Peoples and Extractive Industries

Extractive industries expanding their operations into the territories of Indigenous Peoples in the Americas is a source of conflict and a policy challenge for governments, companies and Indigenous Peoples themselves.
