Research Forum on Cuba

FOCAL's Research Forum on Cuba celebrated its tenth year in 2010 as an important source of information, analysis and dialogue on Cuba.

The Forum sought to: deepen knowledge about Cuba's international relations and the political, social and economic trends and challenges facing the island; increase understanding of the experiences and impact of international actors inside Cuba; and stimulate and facilitate constructive and informed research and discussion about these issues within Canada and internationally.

The Forum  worked with the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University and the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales in Mexico (FLACSO-Mexico) on the Governance and Social Justice in Cuba: Past, Present and Future research initiative from 2005-2008.

The Forum is indebted to the generous support of our previous funders: The Ford Foundation and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

cuban_flagFor over 10 years, the Cubasource.org website was a valuable repository of information about Cuba for policy-makers, analysts, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and the media.

Among the program's activities was the publication of the Chronicle on Cuba, a monthly chronology in English and Spanish of top news items on Cuba produced by FOCAL between 2001 and 2010. The Chronicle on Cuba grouped news items by key themes, including: Cuban Domestic Affairs, Economy, Exile Community, Foreign Affairs, Security, Terrorism and U.S.-Cuba Relations. All past issues of the Chronicle on Cuba are archived online.

Governance and Social Justice in Cuba: Past, Present and Future

Between 2005 and 2008, leading Cuba researchers gathered in four conferences to explore the root causes of Cuba's challenges and develop a framework for long-term capacity building in Cuba.
